Daily Five: Scares That Cares, Eris, Pumpkin Painting

Five things to know for October 21

1. Another sunny day today, with the sun out from 7:08 a.m. to 5:58 p.m. The high temperature is 63 degrees.

2. El N Gee is hosting a Scares That Care event tonight at 5 p.m. The event includes a zombie costume contest, raffles, music, and more. Admission is $10.

3. TDP Art Studio is sponsoring a Halloween pumpkin painting contest and inviting anyone to use their supplies (including pumpkins) and space to give it a shot. The fee is $10 for anyone under 12 and $13 for anyone over, and gift certificates will be awarded for the spookiest, funniest, and most creative. The contest runs through Oct. 30.

4. Looking for a new pet? New London Animal Control is always looking for find new homes for the animals they take in, but we also run Pets of the Week—courtesy of the Waterford Patch—every Sunday to showcase some pets at the Connecticut Humane Society. This posts at 5 p.m.

5. Astronomers first observed Eris on this day in 2003. The photographs from this observation were used in the official discovery of the object in 2005. The discovery of a body larger than Pluto orbiting well beyond that body caused the International Astronomical Union to make a definition for planets in 2006, demoting Pluto to a dwarf planet classification.
