Daily Five: Old New Year, Council Committees, Commuting

Five things to know for January 14

1. Fog and showers likely in the morning, with partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. Sunrise is 7:13 a.m., sunset is 4:43 p.m. The high temperature reaches 52 degrees and the overnight low falls to 33 degrees.

2. The meets at 5 p.m. tonight at City Hall to discuss issues such as a Riverside Park playscape and the permitting procedure for parks and facilities. This is followed by a 6 p.m. meeting of the Public Works Committee, with an agenda on topics including low-impact development, hazard mitigation, and clean fuel.

3. The broomball league is starting up tomorrow at the Rink at Parade Plaza. Registration for the league is $50 and covers all materials. Don’t be left out in the cold if you’re interested.

4. Back to work for you? Check out the Commute section to see how much you’ll have to pay at the pump and how traffic is looking this morning.

5. Happy Old New Year! This marked the beginning of the new year under the Julian calendar rather than the modern Gregorian calendar. The January 13-14 period is still given special recognition in the Orthodox Christian religion.
