Daily Five: More Budget Talks, USS Thresher, Thunder

Five things to know for April 10

1. Cloudy today with a 50-50 chance of showers during the day and possibly some thunder in the evening. Sunrise is 6:16 a.m., sunset is 7:24 p.m. The high temperature reaches 61 degrees and drops to 48 degrees overnight.

2. It’s the 50th anniversary of the loss of the USS Thresher. The nuclear submarine sank about 220 miles off Cape Cod on this day in 1963, with a loss of 129 lives.

3. Mitchell College remembers the Thresher’s loss today with a memorial program at the campus. College and Navy officials will begin this event at 9 a.m.

4. Budget discussions continue tonight when the Finance Committee meets at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall. The budgets under review tonight include the New London Fire Department, Public Library of New London, New London Public Schools, Recreation Department (including the Senior Center and New London Youth Affairs), and City Clerk’s Office.
