Daily Five: Holiday Celebration, Decorations, And Concerts

Five things to know for December 8

1. A 50-50 chance of showers in the morning, dissipating to an overcast afternoon. The high temperature is 49 degrees, the low is 39 degrees. Sunrise is 7:02 a.m., sunset is 4:19 p.m.

2. New London Harbour Towers hosts a pair of concerts today. The New London Community Orchestra plays a holiday concert today at 2 p.m., with a suggested donation of $5. A veterans benefit concert will take place at 7 p.m. with a $25 admission.

3. The Celebration of Lights and Song returns to Parade Plaza this evening. Activities start at 4 p.m. including skating demonstrations, music, and a visit from Santa and Eastern Connecticut Ballet dancers. The tree lighting will take place at 5 p.m.

4. Have you put up your decorations yet? Put a submission in to the Deck the House contest before Dec. 16 for a chance to win $100,000 for the New London Public Schools.

5. Today marked the first appearance of a woman on the British stage. Margaret Hughes was chosen to play Desdemona in a production of Shakespeare’s Othello. Female roles were played by men and boys prior to Hughes’ groundbreaking performance.
