3. New London Halloween Town is back! Trick-or-treating, hay rides, spooky displays, a haunted corn maze, and other fun will take place downtown from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

5. Waldemar Haffkine, a Russian bacteriologist, died on this day in 1930 at the age of 70. Haffkine is best known for developing a vaccine for cholera, which he tested on himself before traveling to India to inoculate thousands of people against the disease.
