Daily Five: Community Baby Shower, Lincoln Book Signing, America's First Elephants

Five things to know for April 13

1. The sun returns today for a partly cloudy day with a high temperature of 56 degrees. Sunrise is 6:11 a.m., sunset is 7:27 p.m.

2. Lawrence + Memorial Hospital hosts a free community baby shower today. Learn more about the hospital’s delivery unit and local resources related to raising a newborn from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

3. Glenn Alan Cheney, author of How a Nation Grieves: Press Accounts of the Death of Lincoln, the Hunt for Booth, and America in Mourning, will be signing copies of the book along with Rep. Joe Courtney, author of the book’s foreword, at the Monte Cristo Bookshop today. They’ll be there at 4 p.m., and the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut will hold a ribbon cutting to welcome the store to New London an hour later.

4. Fill The Spot is back! Today we’ll be looking for your thoughts on what should go into a location that once hosted Italian bakeries and was most recently a pawn shop. This feature runs every Saturday.

5. Elephants arrived in the United States for the first time on this day in 1796. Author Nathaniel Hawthorne recorded the journey of the ship America, which brought the elephant from Bengal to New York.
