2. Connecticut College holds one of its holiday traditions today at the Harkness Chapel. All are welcome to the Christmas Vespers service of carols and lessons. This begins at 5 p.m.

3. One of New London’s churches has also let us know about their midweek Advent services on the events calendar. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer service starts at 5:30 p.m.

5. Paula Ackerman became the first woman to lead a mainstream Jewish congregation on this day in 1950 when she became the interim spiritual leader at Temple Beth Israel in Meridian, Miss. Ackerman’s husband served as the rabbi of the synagogue and Ackerman took over spiritual duties for three years after his death.
