2. Work on the 2014 budget moves forward tonight, with the Finance Committee completing its review at a 5 p.m. meeting at City Hall and the City Council holding a special meeting to approve a first reading of the budget at 7 p.m. The Council will also meet in executive session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the status of pending or threatened litigation by Police Chief Margaret Ackley as well as Ackley’s employment and a retirement proposal from her attorneys.

5. Harold Bride, the junior wireless officer on the RMS Titanic, died on this day in 1956 at the age of 66. Bride, who with senior officer Jack Phillips sent out distress signals after the ship hit an iceberg, survived the Titanic’s 1912 sinking by managing to get aboard an overturned lifeboat. Phillips died in the shipwreck.
