Celebrate National Trails Day in New London

New Londoners of all ages are invited on a couple nature walks to celebrate the event.

Take a short break from your city living and reconnect with nature in New London with a nature walk on National Trails Day!

New London will be marking the national event with a themed nature walk at Ocean Beach Park and another walk around Riverside Park this weekend, according to the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association pamphlet.

On Saturday, June 1 from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM at Ocean Beach Park/Alewife Cove the public is invited to attend an educational nature walk. Join Louise Fabrykiewicz for this themed walk inspired by the late herbalist Gladys Tantaquidgeon, beloved medicine woman of the Mohegans in Uncasville.

The walk will travel 0.75 miles with an opportunity to check out the park’s new handicap accessible connector trail. Lovely views of the Long Island Sound shoreline from the banks of the Alewife Cove Tidal Creek will be enjoyed.

Meet at the Garden Gateway next to the parking lot at Ocean Beach Park (1225 Ocean Avenue). Rain postpones to June 2, 6:00 PM. Pre-registration is REQUIRED. Space is limited. Questions and to pre-register: contact Louise Fabrykiewicz, (860) 444-8916, lowf@juno.com

And then on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. there's a walk around Riverside Park. Walk through the 18-acre woodland at Riverside Park with County Extension Master Gardener Susan Munger and learn about native and invasive plant species. The park’s varied landscape includes river views, rocky outcroppings, and rich plant life.

Meet at the Amphitheater picnic area. Follow the signs at the park entrance on Adelaide Street. Pre-registration is RECOMMENDED. Questions, rain plan, and to pre-register: contact co-leader Ronna Stuller, (860) 447-9823, info@riversideparkconservancy.org.

A total of 152 Connecticut towns will be celebrating National Trails Day on June 1 and 2, according to the Connecticut Forest & Park Association.
