Uncasville Nursing Home Co-workers Split $40,000 Powerball Prize

On September 18, Kysha Drummond of Groton asked several of her co-workers at the Orchard Grove Specialty Care Center in Uncasville if they wanted to chip in $3 to buy some Powerball tickets for the Wednesday night drawing—Noreen Foley of Sprague and Kristina Beaulieu of Lisbon were the only two who said yes.  Drummond purchased three Powerball tickets, one of which turned out to be a $40,000 prize winner.

“The morning after the drawing, I went to a lottery retailer and scanned our tickets in a ticket checker,” Drummond told lottery officials.  “I saw a prize that began with 4 and was followed by a whole lot of zeros.  I asked the clerk to scan the ticket for me and that’s when he told me it was a $40,000 winner!”

The winning Powerball numbers on September 18 were 7 - 10 - 22 - 32 - 35.  One of the “Quick Pick” tickets that Drummond purchased matched four of the five winning numbers drawn, plus the Powerball number, 19.

Because Drummond wisely Power Played their Powerball tickets, their $10,000 prize was automatically quadrupled for a $40,000 win.  In total, 45,598 winning Powerball tickets were sold statewide for that date, with prizes ranging from $4 to the group’s $40,000 prize win.

“I was so excited; I couldn’t believe it,” Drummond said.  “I called Kristina and left her a crazy voice message and then called Noreen—she didn’t believe me,” said Drummond, laughing.

Arriving at Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill this morning, each winner happily claimed their share of the $40,000 prize in a check for $13,333 (after taxes) with definitive plans for their windfall:  Kysha will take a long over-due vacation; Noreen will use the money to help pay for her daughter’s school trip to Europe and help her brother; and Kristina will put the money towards a new car.

“It was meant to be,” Drummond said with a smile.  “I’ve always dreamed of coming to Lottery headquarters.”

Drummond, Foley and Beaulieu’s prize winning Powerball ticket was purchased at the Sully’s Mobil Mart, one of the Lottery’s High-Tier Claim Centers, located at 382 Vauxhall Street in New London.

Overall odds of winning a Powerball prize are 1 in 31.8.  The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot prize are 1 in 175,223,510.
