Rotary Club of New London Sponsors Camp Rotary at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School

New London, CT (June 17, 2013) - The Rotary Club of New London is pleased to continue its collaboration with the New London School System in bringing Camp Rotary to the community.  Camp Rotary, an award winning summer program for New London middle school students, saw a record number of applications for 2013 and organizers look forward to an exciting year!
This year’s program will combine the best of Camp Rotary with a new academic component, funded through the New London Public Schools.  Students will receive daily instruction in math, reading and vocabulary every Monday – Thursday 9-11 am; with the academic program being STEM themed (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and continue the focus on school-wide priorities of improving vocabulary development, enhancing strategic reading skills and increasing math literacy.  What will remain the same is the continued partner programming with USCGA Mentor Program, Connecticut College, Sonalyst, L+M, and Ocean Beach Park.  Students will also participate in a collegiate visitation program which serves to generate a powerful incentive for academic achievement.
Afternoons at camp will include Aqua-culture course work and a marine science immersion program at the Mystic Aquarium.  Nancy Magnani and EASTCONN will provide students with teambuilding and engineering design activities while constructing Land Yachts and holding Land Yacht races.  This learning adventure will conclude with a Prismatics Laser Show!!
Other activities will include a new partnership with New England Science and Sailing in Stonington.  Participation in their US Sailing sponsored REACH program utilizes STEM principles with on-the-water leaning experiences.   On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays students will enjoy a swimming session at Connecticut College or Ocean Beach Park.  Organizers are pleased that New London Community Boating will continue be a large part of the camp again this year.  BDJMS students are looking forward to New London Community Boating’s Opening Day ceremonies, starting at 9 AM on Monday, June 24, 2013 where they will help to raise the American flag and the flag of the State of Connecticut.
Every year, Camp Rotary seeks to increase its educational expectations while challenging students to adapt to new experiences and the Rotary Club of New London is proud of the collaborative efforts that go into providing participants with the amazing Camp Rotary experience.
