Be a Volunteer Reader on Read Across America Day

In honor of the 17th annual Read Across America celebration on Monday, March 3, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is partnering with local schools on a community-wide reading event. The Seussical celebration will kick off a week of reading across the nation as National Education Association (NEA) members gather students, parents, and community members together to share their love of reading.

United Way values literacy and the role of volunteers in the classroom. Last September, United Way mobilized volunteers to read to more than 1,200 children on the day of the United Way Campaign Kickoff event.

Now, United Way is again inviting volunteers from businesses, organizations and the entire community to join the movement to Read Across America and share their joy of reading with others. Volunteers will read to several classrooms in the school library. United Way will provide volunteers with several Dr. Seuss books to read and leave with each school as a donation as well as accompanying activities. Volunteer readers can expect to visit a school from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or around March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
