We (I’m sure, hundreds of New London residents) can read with relief and optimism The Days lead Editorial of Sunday, November 6. The Day has certainly swayed on this divisive Riverside Park issue during the past month, but through the wisdom of historical research came upon the integral role the Coast Guard has always played in the existence of Riverside Park. A few thoughts as we near election day. I agree wholeheartedly that the “sharing” of Riverside Park at a price far in excess to its value with our friends and neighbors of the Coast Guard Academy is the right thing to do. As it did previously in 1985 (the most recent time a full scale investment revival occurred) The Coast Guard will make ALL of Riverside park a true gem to be appreciated. The Park will no longer be ignored or briefly remembered. There will be public access (as the Coast Guard Academy has always permitted public access to its facilities!). There will be money for the city to fulfill the dreams of citizens who want to continuously support all the City’s parks: $2.9 million worth of money to execute on the City’s action plan for our parks. There is also the important fact that the Coast Guard Academy spends over $160 Million in New London EVERY year (twice the City’s budget). We cannot spare The Coast Guard and with them we have the opportunity to grow as they are growing as the lead agency in our Nation’s Homeland Security. For we cannot forget that the principal construction on the site will be a state of the art simulator to make our service men and women more prepared and our City, State and Nation more safe. Endless towns and cities would sacrifice more than one-third of a city park to land this sale/ investment. Sincerely, Jordan C. Levin
