Photo Show 34 & Art of the Boat: Photographs from Mystic Seaport’s Rosenfeld Collection September 28 – November 10
Opening Reception October 4, 5:30pm – 7:00pm
Mystic Arts Center (MAC) opens two fascinating photography exhibitions in its galleries this month; Photo Show 34 and Art of the Boat: Photographs from Mystic Seaport’s Rosenfeld Collection. Both exhibitions will run September 28 – November 10 with an opening reception on October 4 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in MAC’s galleries at 9 Water Street in Mystic.
MAC’s annual photography show, Photo Show 34, features original photography from local and regional artists. The show will be juried by Lindsay Elgin, teacher and advisor for Rhode Island School of Design’s Continuing Education Digital Photography Certificate Program. Elgin holds a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts and a Masters in Fine Arts Photography Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island.
MAC is also partnering with Mystic Seaport, the nation’s leading maritime museum, to present a selection of work from the world’s largest single collection of maritime photography: the Rosenfeld Collection. The Art of the Boat exhibition features photographs which chronicle 100 years of yachting from 1881 to 1992 and capture the essence of the maritime experience. These evocative images represent the magnificent artistic achievement of Morris Rosenfeld & Sons while providing a tangible connection to Mystic’s maritime past.
The collection’s fine art prints show the dynamic balance of sky and water, emphasizing the boat and the moment that defines its nature. Each print, produced through a classic technique using the contemporary digital pigment process and the platinum palladium print process dating back to 1875, demonstrates a rich tonal range, heightened detail, and a luminous quality that seems painted. The process has perfectly preserved some of the earliest photographs.
The opening reception is free to the public. Both exhibitions will be on view September 28 – November 10. Artwork from MAC’s permanent collection will also be on view in the Schuster Gallery. The exhibits are sponsored by ABC PhotoLab, Canning-Berghendal Group, Mystic Seaport, and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.
