Community Update

On Wednesday, September 4th, at the Otis Library in Norwich (261 Main Street, Norwich) please join me as I host a complimentary viewing of the award winning, powerful HBO documentary, “How to Die in Oregon”. The movie will be shown at 5:30 pm.

Connecticut is one of a handful of states that has considered compassionate choice at the end of life. It is a highly controversial and emotional issue for many. As a retired minister and former Hospice Chaplain I have seen first hand some of the anguish, both physical and emotional, that can arise for some near the end of life.

If the day ever comes that I face pain and suffering with no medical alternative to dying, I would want the choice. This is not to say that from here I know what I would do, I do not.   But I know this much, I would want the choice to die with dignity, to say good-bye to my loved ones, to celebrate the life I’ve lived and then peacefully pass on to what lies next.  People in a growing number of states have this choice, including Oregon.

How to Die in Oregon is an unflinching look at one family’s decision and the Oregon law that allows aid in dying for the terminally ill, an issue that will be considered in the Connecticut State Legislature again this coming year. Wherever you may stand on this issue you are welcome to the free screening of this film.

I hope you will join me.
