Shutdown Threatens More Jobs, October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Five things to know in New London for Thursday, October 3, 2013.

1. Wonderful weather again today. Weather.com is predicting another sunny day with clear skies and a high of 74 degrees. This evening should be partly cloudy with no chance of rain and an overnight low of 57 degrees.

2. The government shutdown continues to be felt far and wide, which is about the distance remaining between the two parties as Congress argues about when or whether they'll pass a budget despite a looming fiscal crisis if they don't. Yesterday, United Technologies Corp.—Connecticut's largest single employer—announced it would have to furlough thousands of employees if government inspectors that monitor defense contract work aren't back on the job soon.

3. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month but many people are painfully aware of domestic violence on a daily basis. Nearly one in four women, one in seven men, and more than 3 million children across the country are affected by domestic violence. Want to know how you can help? Here's one suggestion and it's easy to do.

4. Meetings Today: Kiwanis Club of New London meets from Noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Clarke Center at Mitchell College to hear guest speaker Shannon West Brenek of Heavy Hitters; New London Planning & Zoning Commission meets at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.

5. If you're planning a trip to New York this week, Metro-North has revamped its schedule through Friday to work around the power issues that have crippled the line since last week.
