New London Is In The Pink, Doing the Write Thing, And Feeling The Government Shutdown

Five things to know for Wednesday, October 2, 2013, in New London

1. It's going to be another gorgeous day. According to Weather.com, we can expect clear sunny skies with a high of 80 degrees and an overnight low of 54 degrees—perfect sleeping weather. The only downside is that you might find yourself sneezing if you have allergies. There's a high pollen alert for our area.

2. People are beginning to feel the effects of the federal government shutdown already as more than 800,000 federal employees, including some 750 employees at the Naval Sub Base in Groton, are now furloughed, federal parks and museums are closed, and parents and children served by many Head Start programs are left in the lurch. The only good news—if you can call it that given the context—is that people's unemployment benefits won't be affected.

3. In The Pink: The Breast Health Task Force of Southeastern Connecticut celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with the 8th Annual IN THE PINK Regional Art Exhibit Reception at Garde Arts Center, 325 State Street, New London. The event features Kristen Jensen Survivor Portraits Photography Exhibit, Tsetse Gallery Performers, and Dr. Elizabeth Arguelles, Dr. Vanessa Johnson, and Dr. Brenda Koblick who will be speaking about early detection and treatment advances.
