Food Pantry News, Voter Registration and More At New London Public Library Today

Five things to help you plan your day, Tuesday, September 24, in New London.

1. Another beautiful day is ahead of us, with sunny skies and no chance of rain. Weather.com is predicting a high temperature of 69 degrees with an overnight low of 47 degrees.

2. Today is National Voter Registration Day and the League of Women Voters of southeastern Connecticut will be holding voter registrations at the New London Public Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you will be 18 years old by Election Day, (Nov. 5), are a Connecticut resident and a U.S. citizen, you are eligible to register. Just bring your CT driver's license or provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.  For more information about LWV of SECT go to www.lwvsect@lwvct.org

3. New London Area Food Pantry is in need of volunteers, especially on Thursdays from 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Some heavy lifting (up to about 50 pounds) is involved. If you're interested, please stop by the food pantry at 106 Truman Street, New London, to fill in an application. The Pantry is open Monday 2-4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 10-noon. For more information, call (860) 443-6680.

4. Hurricane historian Louis Allyn and New London Historian Sally Ryan will present a program about the great storm of September 21, 1938, with stories and pictures showing before and after scenes of the devastation wrought by the great hurricane of 1938. The program will be held at Waterford Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own pictures, memorabilia and memories to share.

5. The New London Public Library has a number of programs going on today, and every Tuesday. If you've ever wanted to try your hand at drawing, the library is offering drawing for absolute beginners from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday through October 22 for adults 16 and up with Cindy Samul. Tuesdays are also "Teen Terrific," as the library gives kids a place to meet, get homework help, and play board games from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 860-447-1411 or visit www.plnl.org.

Did you forget? All this month, New London Public Library is offering an amnesty for people with overdue library books. All fines will be waived in exchange for a donation of nonperishable food items for the New London Food Pantry.
