Pretty funny Spencer. But you don't want a museum there. You need something that generates taxes.…Read More Museums are mostly non-profit thereby not generating any taxes. I know you were being funny. I was disgusted to read the developer couldn't show financial backing.

Barbara, I agree with you. But it is probably a lot easier to get an illegal social security number…Read More than we would know. There are two ways of looking at this issue, but my resentment is that I have to pay for them.
Barbara Crocker May 17, 2013 at 07:52 am
But for state aid they would have to have a Social Security number. Bending and breaking laws is…Read More how they got here in the first place. The fact that elected officials condone and encourage these laws to be broken is the biggest problem that I have with this whole debacle. "Undocumented residents" place a burden on all of us, and take jobs that could be worked by legal residents. Employers hire illegals (yes I prefer calling them what they are, to hell with being politically correct) because it saves them money, not because "no one else would work these jobs". This is a slap in the face to all of our ancestors who came to this country and followed the rules to become citizens.
Carol Haley May 17, 2013 at 06:51 am
The way things have been going in the eastern part of the United States, as long as the illegals are…Read More not breaking the law criminally (motor vehicle is different), they are not arrested for being illegal. Its the illegal immigrants who break the law, such as the large drug bust recently in the papers. As long as they are minding their own business, they get a pass. The only problem I have with illegals is their rush to get on state aid, food stamps, etc. I don't think we should have to support those that choose to live in this country illegally. Becoming a US citizen is not cheap. It is expensive, but it is something that they must work for.
Carol Haley May 15, 2013 at 05:05 pm
Sounds like a bunch of goobledygook to me. And Sue, the Democrats being divided isn't anything new…Read More as well as the backstabbing and bs. It's been going on for years. That is one of the reasons I changed to independent a long time ago. I'm presently a Democrat, but changing back to independent as soon as I can get down there.
Felicia Hendersen May 15, 2013 at 09:00 am
Bravo Sue P. And Kathleen I changed the word from "her" to "his". Why should…Read More people not question the motives of the city council president?
Sue P. May 15, 2013 at 08:53 am
Glad to here that Felicia, I sure hope that you are who you are and not the HE I was told you are.…Read More Now is the time to work together and not pick each other apart like the Administration is doing to the Democrat Town Committee. You should see how divided they are and all the back stabbing and bickering that goes on. I say stay clear of that group.

I agree Richard argyle sweaters would have really made it. It is really sad Michael Passero has gone…Read More to the dark side and has aligned himself with the administration rather than the people of the city. The one time high vote getter will be all done in November.

Felicia Hendersen May 13, 2013 at 12:01 pm
Sue P. I agree. How can one mayor make so many bad moves in such a short tenure. This guy is not…Read More even running out of people to blame things on. The disclosure in the paper today of the grievance resolution for the Officer Joshua Bergeson termination by the administration was a violation of the non disclosure terms of the settlement. Who will the mayor blame that screw up on?
We only ask for one thing to be done correctly. Damn it the mayor and his staff all got fully vested after only 12 months on the job, who else gets that anywhere in the world today? The mayor is taking care of himself and his few remaining supporters on the back of the NEW LONDON tax payers.
J. Scagnetti May 13, 2013 at 03:14 pm
Completely agree with all the comments on here. Illegal means just that illegal . That's the case…Read More when it comes to everything else but for some reason not with this issue. Most of this is political pandering to the ethnic groups where most of these illegals are coming from (south and central America) in order to secure votes. While at the same time continuing to overburden our country with people we just can't afford to take care of atleast at this time. The system for allowing people citizenship should be overhauled to make the process more efficient and quicker, but other than that people who are found to be here illegally should be deported and possibly even incarcerated at the expense of their country of origin.
Spencer May 12, 2013 at 08:09 pm
I like your analysis, Daniella!! We are suppose to report criminal activities. Being here without…Read More papers or without making any effort to become citizens--or even working without being documented in order to pay the taxes--are criminal activities. Hiring illegals in order to get cheaper workers is a criminal activity.
It is almost like saying that if you make cocaine legal--it would be safer to use!
I wouldn't mind if they pass the law in such a way that getting a driver's license would be a condition of getting legal. But getting a driver's license--because it will make the roads safer??? C'mon!!! Get a better thought proscess then that!!!
Kenneth R. Lewis May 12, 2013 at 02:41 pm
I agree, throw out the whole bad, illegal and undocumented lot.

if the PD wasn't so busy protecting the commercial heavyweights in the Auto Park at Coleman and…Read More Broad, they might cruise around the southie section in their unmarked units more often. Flashy lights, easily recognized marked cruisers are like a beacon, easy to spot by thieves and others. Even the bike cops make themselves too obvious. These crooks are sleuths, opportunists, with enough smarts to know this. On the other hand, the neighbors must be idiots if they see things and don't call too.

Sue, Jeff is a Finizio supporter, he touts the mantra that the mayor is never wrong, it is the…Read More people around him that give him wrong information. If that is true why are those people still there to give him continuing wrong advice. That would make the mayor an even bigger fool for surrounding himself with poor advisers and keeping them on after so many screw ups. The mayor cannot and will not ever be responsible or accountable. Except for the Coast Guard Museum that was well in the works before Finizio ever came to New London.
The bottom line is the FIZ has got to go and in merry little dwindling band of supporters helps that cause every time that they post.
Sue P. May 9, 2013 at 08:13 pm
Jeff, What business is coming into the city? If you are talking about the museum well then that is a…Read More non profit that will pay no taxes and Finizio gave our land away. If you are talking about the new housing projects that will be built at the fort, well those soon will be federally run. What business are you talking about?
Jeff Brown May 9, 2013 at 06:52 pm
Those examples are all things that a Mayor has to deal with on an everyday basis. Especially when…Read More taking office in a city that has not had that form of government in a long time. The Al Mayo incident I believe he made a judgment based on the information he had .Retirement deals and what a secretary makes in a year are not a big deal to me . Just because you put a negative light on everything doesn't make it negative . I'm concerned with bigger and better things like bringing more businesses and money into this city and I think he's doing a fine job of that!

Suzanne, I would want to believe that the pizza's are being eaten by the seniors, but they are not.…Read More The Seniors pay for pizza parties themselves. I have a few friends that go everyday to the senior center and they said they take up collections and buy their own food. As for the youth center they do have pizza bought for them from a special account and only once in awhile on movie night. If the kids have lunch they usually get peanut and butter sandwichs. As for the Police dept. and the fire dept. buying clothing for THEMSELVES, this has been going on for awhile and no one once to address it. The clothing is bought at full price and the receipts even have the names of the person buying the clothes. I said that I contacted the Mayors office and Zak did seemed concerned and I believe the Mayor was too but there are bigger problems then the union guys buying jeans instead of uniforms. I've been getting the freedom of information information for over a year now. I know exactly where and how these people are spending our money. If you have any concerns please feel free to ask for information on a certain check. If you want to know the process I will tell you how to get the info.
Suzanne Cattanach May 6, 2013 at 02:11 pm
I know that a couple weeks ago, the Senior Center (which falls under the rec dept.) ordered pizza…Read More (delivered to the Center) or a pizza lunch FOR THE SENIORS. That probably is a periodically recurring event there. There are legitimate reasons for food purchases, I would not assume they are employees stealing. Youth affairs and/or rec dept. would have food at events. Is it possible that some basic clothing necessities are bought by the PD for persons under arrest being held? They probably don't want relatives bringing in anything because that just creates headache re possible smuggling. Hopefully they are buying whatever is on clearance. WalMart might be cheaper but probably no way to do PO's and billing by WalMart and Bob's is wlling to accommodate.

A wonderful tribute to Emilie and a great honor for NL! Thank you to the New Jersey Firefighters…Read More Mutual Benevolent Association and its president, Bill Lavin.
The 'statue of the fireman' stood for several years at the top of Riverside, so it is especially heart-warming that the playground is sponsored by the Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association.
Let's hope that this memorial for Emilie Parker in Riverside will serve as a constant reminder of the importance of putting politics aside and working together in cooperation for the benefit of the most vulnerable members of society. Lt Spinnato's words are well-advised.

"BREAKING NEWS!! Usually reliable sources report that long time city employees William R. According to sources, it is the intent of Mayor Finizio to have the job descriptions for the above employee positions rewritten with new employees hired at a lower rate.
So much for long and faithful service."

Jeff Smith is the biggest fool I have ever seen and the council president to put his trust and faith…Read More in him does not say much for the integrity or ability of the council president. Jeff Smith never has the answers and never gets the answers for the council or community members.

Spencer, the council president should have addressed this question. But remember he is a city…Read More employee and it is not in his best interest to have audits done. Maybe we need to move toward volunteer fire fighters.
William Desmond April 30, 2013 at 08:34 am
There are no audits and the council president, councilor hyslop, councilor nolan and councilor…Read More macrino are all the mayor's boys and will never stand up for the taxpayers of this city. The council president did make sure his own department has nearly all it's funding cuts restored but the essential police services that protect us all remain gutted. Thanks Bud, I appreciate it. And I love the fact-less, "patently incorrect", and likely…Read More soon-to-be ridiculously personal attacks all day long. Busses are parked under the bridge right now, go verify Mrs. Source, they're certainly not at the High School where the Board of Ed (and public) were first told they would be parked instead of Fort Trumbull. Not a peep was released when Dr. Fischer made the change either - after pressuring the bus company.
Bud Wizer April 30, 2013 at 08:37 pm
Keep up your excellent perspectives on our school board matters, Jason. And keep in mind that the…Read More more you are attacked for that, the more likely it is that you are getting close to matters that city officials would prefer not be aired.
The school busses, I noticed today (April 30) are parked under the Gold Star Memorial Bridge span along Crystal Avenue. Whether they will stay there and not return to Fort Trumbull, I cannot say, at the moment, because I have not asked the appropriate city officials yet. What I have discovered, however, is that parties occupying the city property where the busses were parked in Fort Trumbull do not, repeat, do not have formal leases with the city to use that property. Best I was able to determine from the mayor's and cithy building/develpoment/planning officies is that the arrangment between the cithy and Turello Inc. and Richard Humphreville is "an informal arrangment" that has been in place for many years. The question before us now is whether EB might negotiate with private parties occupying that city property rather than city officials who lawfully have the authority to negotiate any and all matters pertaining to city property that is not under the purview of "authorities" like housing, harbor, pollution-control, schools, etc. In any city but New London this "informal" arrangement would be a controvery. Here, however, it seems to be business-as-usual. Like I say, Jason, keep up your good work. Who knows, you just might find yourself running for office in New London and, I'm hoping, that will be as a Democrat.

Violent Crime is a a record high in New London while across the state and the country the violent…Read More crimes have declined.
