Cartooning Classes Return To Custom House This Summer

The youth classes will begin June 19

  Kids, don't spend your summer watching cartoons when you can learn to draw your own! The Custom House Maritime Museum is teaming up with artist Jon Buller to host a summer session of cartooning classes, the museum announced on Facebook. According to the post, the "Cartooning for Kids" class will be held on the following Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m.: The four-session class is for kids ages 7 and up. Cost for the class is $75, which includes materials.  To register, call (860) 447-2501.

Greater Middletown Chorale Performing Spring Concert On Sunday [VIDEO]

Statewide singing group visits the Second Congregational Church of New London

A statewide chorale will give its first concert in southeastern Connecticut this weekend, bringing a program of spring music to the Second Congregational Church. The Greater Middletown Chorale will perform “Come, Let Us Sound With Melody” at 4 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $25, while the attendees over the age of 62 are admitted for $20. Students from age 10 through college pay $15, while children under the age of nine are admitted for free. The chorale was established in Middletown in 1977, but today includes members from 35 different communities. Matt McCaffrey, president of the chorale and pastor of the Second Congregational Church, said the group includes some professional singers but mostly consists of people who enjoy singing…

City Canvases Mural Unveilings Begin Wednesday

Water Street Parking Garage trompe l’oeil debuts as part of downtown New London mural project

The first mural in New London's "City Canvases" project will be unveiled on Wednesday. "Cabinet of Shells," a 40-foot trompe l’oeil, features a three-dimensional image of shells from Indonesia, India, and Mexico. The piece was created by graphic designer Peter Good along with Jan Cummings, Kirsten Desnoyers and Jesse Good. The mural, located on a tower on the Water Street Parking Garage, will be revealed in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Speakers will include Peter Bergstrom, director of the Department of Economic and Community Development, along with Mayor Daryl Finizio, Hygienic Art president Vincent Scarano, and State Senator Andrea Stillman. NL Public Library Seeks Donations For Book Sale

Drop off your donations by May 5

  If you've been doing some spring cleaning and have some items to donate to the Public Library of New London's book sale, be sure to drop them off by Saturday! The library has announced on Facebook that they're accepting donations of books, records, CDs, videos, tapes and puzzles, but please, no magazines or Readers Digest condensed books. Donations are due by Saturday, May 5, and the sale will begin Saturday, May 12 and runs May 14 through 18.

Joe Courtney has announced on Facebook that voting for his photo contest is open now through Wednesday, May 2 at 5 p.m. Courtney asked the Facebook world to submit photos of Eastern Connecticut to become his cover photo, and 19 user-submitted entries met posting requirements.
