Two-Alarm Fire Damages Reed Street Residence

Four escape morning blaze

Four people escaped a morning blaze in a residential neighborhood.

According to the Hartford Courant, the two-alarm fire at 48 Reed Street started at about 5:30 a.m. The lower floors of the building were vacant and four people escaped from the second floor, although their dog is missing.

The Courant reports that the house's roof caved in after about two hours and that mutual aid and the Naval Submarine Base Firefighter Assist and Search Team assisted the fire department.

The New London Fire Department's Facebook page reported that responders found heavy fire upon arrival and that strong winds inhibited efforts to fight the fire.

Mayor Daryl Finizio said in an e-mail this morning that he had been briefed on the fire.

"I am grateful no fatalities, or serious injuries, have been reported from this fire. The fire appears contained and controlled," Finizio said. "My thanks to all of our hard working emergency responders for their great efforts today."

Firefighters remain on the scene but the fire has been brought under control.
