Shore Line East Expansion Gets Mayoral Support
Candidates attend event advocating increased service to New London
The number of candidates for mayor at Union Station on Saturday: three, with a handful of City Council and Board of Education candidates as well. The number of Shore Line East trains scheduled to stop in during the day: zero.
That was the key reason for the date of the event, said Laura Cordes. A City Center District commissioner, Cordes also oversees the Shore Line East/One More Stop project of the district. This initiative advocates the expansion of Shore Line East service to include New London on a greater scale.
The line has service to New Haven and on to New York. Currently, one train stops at Union Station in the morning and another stops in the evening during weekdays. There is no weekend service to New London, although a special train ran for Sailfest weekend and Cordes said there are plans for extended weekend holiday service as well. She said the office of the strong mayor will better be able to advocate for expanded service as a helpful factor in economic development.
Saturday’s event invited each of the six mayoral candidates to sign a pledge reading, "If elected mayor of New London, I pledge to call on Governor Malloy and the DOT to expand weekend and weekday Shore Line East passenger rail service all the way to New London." Democratic candidate Daryl Finizio, Republican candidate Rob Pero, and independent candidate Andrew Lockwood signed the pledge. Independent candidates Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh and Martin Olsen were absent, along with write-in candidate Michael Buscetto III, but Cordes said they had given their assent to the initiative as well.
“We are really proud that we’ve had support from all of the mayoral candidates,” she said.
Finizio said he considers rail service essential for economic development. Lockwood said he would like to see expansion on to Providence, R.I. and thinks New London can be a leader in the effort. Pero said he hopes the expanded service for New London can occur within a year, and said he was glad the mayoral campaigns were drawing to a close on a consensus issue.
Todd O’Donnell, part of the coalition and co-owner of Union Station, said both expanded Shore Line East service and a central corridor to Brattleboro, Vt., could increase the number of visitors to the region and offer alternatives to Amtrak. He said he thinks the mayor can advocate for it and other incentives, suggesting that southeastern Connecticut is given low priority in state funding.
“It costs about two million bucks a year to run a train up to New London,” he said.

As a small business owner, the cost associated with Amtrak travel to and from NYC and Fairfield County can be prohibitive - we need a reliable, regularly scheduled alternative. I applaud the three candidates for supporting this event. Intercity commerce should be a key objective for anyone who wants to be New London's Mayor. I'm hoping our Mayor might be proactive and explore the idea of merging Shoreline East with Metro North, and target our city as a destination for innovative, high speed commuter rail solutions. The Brattleboro line sounds like a fantastic plan! From what I've seen of Daryl Finizio, I'd expect he'd be the best qualified of the three who showed up to actually (sorry) help that train leave the station. The three who didn't show? I can only assume they don't much care about that train, or maybe it's left the station without them? Please, everyone, get out and VOTE on Tuesday!

Is daryl Finizio a lawyer practicing from his home or is he in violation of New London zoning running a business in a R-1 zone, which is it?

Ann,
What does that have to do with this article at all? After months of watching your comments and random accusations, in the last 48 hours can you just keep quiet and go vote on Tuesday. Regardless of who you vote for, just vote and stop posting nonsense.

Ok you're entitled to that opinion.
However, you're a Buscetto supporter. He interfered and undermined the authority of the chief of police to do her job adequately and called it "leadership." That's not leadership that's putting the citizens of New London in danger because the person in charge of keeping us safe was unable to do her job.
He then tried to play it off by saying he was cleared before the primary...Nope cleared of a DIFFERENT ethics violation involving Kathleen Mitchell.
Now he says he's been cleared and is only facing an ethics violation for not recusing himself. Once again, not true. It's for interference with the police department.
You want to talk about great leadership and yell about Finizio because he's a smart guy and different from what you wanted, that's fine. You have every right. This right here tho, is why you and a large part of the DTC do not stand for New London.

Typical ugly political tactics. Divert attention from the positive story presented and bring up non-issues.
I support the expansion of Shoreline East to New London. This benefits all New Londoners. Every train that arrives at Old Saybrook should continue to New London.
The eventual linkup to the Central Corridor train line heading north will make New London an even more important connection point than it is today.
Why supporters of other candidates can't be civil is beyond me. After tomorrow, we'll all be New Londoners with a new mayor, whoever that is.
