Mitchell College Men's Lacrosse Surges Past Becker

Late goals help Mariners past the Hawks

The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team had a strong start and finish Tuesday to earn their first win of the season against Becker College. The following information was provided by Matt Tittle, sports information director at Becker College:

Mitchell College (1-4) scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, propelling them to a 14-9 win over Becker College (0-5) in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon.

In the first quarter Mitchell jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Senior Adam Grillo (Waterford, Conn.) got the Mariners on the board just 00:30 into the game on an unassisted goal. After Demetre Lyras (Rockey Point, N.Y.) put Mitchell up 2-0, Shane Sullivan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) tallied back to back goals, putting Becker in the early 4-0 hole.

The Hawks got on the board with 8:07 remaining in the quarter on Joe Ignagni’s (Kingston, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the season. Junior Jeff Petersen (Syracuse, N.Y.) cut the Mariners lead in half with an unassisted goal with 6:45 left in the first stanza.  The Mariners increased their lead to 5-2 when Aaron Feinberg (Waterford, Conn.) fed an open Demetre Lyras in front of the Hawks net for his second goal of the game

Mitchell widened their lead to 6-2 just 00:15 into the second quarter on a Chris Joy (East Lyme, Conn.) goal. After the teams exchanged goals in the 19th minute, the Hawks got back to back scores from Ignagni and John DeAngelis (Swampscott, Mass.), cutting the Mariner advantage to 7-5.  Adam Grillo gave Mitchell some breathing room with a goal just before halftime, giving the Mariners an 8-5 lead at the break.

After both teams exchanged scores to open the second half, Jeff Petersen scored back to back goals, cutting the Mitchell lead to 9-8 after three quarters.

Mitchell secured their first win of the season when they opened the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals, two coming off the stick of Demetre Lyras.

The Mariners got four goals from Shane Sullivan, Adam Grillo and Demetre Lyras, lifting the Mariners to the 14-9 victory. Mitchell goalie Peter Eshenfelder (Quaker Hill, Conn.) made 15 saves on the afternoon.  The Mariners will shoot for their first winning streak of the season when they host Mount Saint Vincent College on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Jeff Petersen led the Hawks with four goals, while John DeAngelis chipped in with three. Becker will try for their first win of the season on Thursday when they host Mass. Maritime at 4 p.m.
