Police arrested a 54-year-old Enfield man Thursday after he was accused of confronting shoppers in a lewd manner.
Gary P. Germaine, of 46 South River Street, was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count of second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $100,000 bond.
According to Deputy Chief Marshall Segar, police were called to Shop Rite at 7:20 p.m. after receiving a complaint of a man exposing himself. Segar said Germaine was stopped as he attempted to drive away from the store. Segar said the vehicle contained "a rubber sex toy that resembled male genitalia, a 'jock' strap/athletic supporter and a zucchini wrapped in duct tape."
Segar said security footage at the store appears to show Germaine putting the items inside his sweatpants and confronting people. He said children were among those who witnessed the conduct.
Germaine is a registered sex offender in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The Massachusetts registry says he formerly lived in Palmer, Mass. and was convicted in 1996 and 1998 of open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior. The Connecticut registry says he was also convicted in Massachusetts of the charge in 2001. According to state court records, Germaine was convicted of disorderly conduct in the Middletown GA 9 court in 2009.
Germaine will be arraigned in the GA 10 court on Jan. 3.
