Daily Five: Show Some Love

Five things to know for January 24, 2012

1. That rain the National Weather Service predicted for Monday is apparently a little late in getting here; the latest prediction says it will take place mostly in the early morning hours before giving way to a mild, sunny day today. Sunrise is 7:07 a.m., sunset is 4:53 p.m., and the high temperature is 50 degrees.

2. The City Center District officially launches its “NL (heart) USCG” campaign today. The effort, which was organized as a show of appreciation to the Coast Guard institutions in New London, will get its start with a kickoff event at 10:30 a.m. at Union Station.

3. New London Youth Affairs is running a series of Parent Leadership Institute Training classes, including a class starting at 5:30 p.m. today. Check out the event listing for more information.

4. Especially after photo-ops like Saturday’s snowstorm, we’re always looking for photos from around New London for our Neighborhood Gallery. Show off your photography skills here!

5. Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian and one of six American soldiers who raised the flag atop Mount Suribachi in a moment captured in an iconic World War II photograph, died on this day in 1955. Hayes was 33 years old.
