Connecticut College Sports Roundup

The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team won a home game against the University of New England on Sunday, while the women's sailing team competed in the Navy Spring Intersectional. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College.

Men's Lacrosse: Conn College 12, University of New England 3

Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) erupted with four goals to lead the 10th ranked Connecticut College men's lacrosse team to a 12-3 victory against the University of New England in a non-conference game played on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Sunday.

The Camels even their record at 1-1 with the win, while the Nor'Easters slip to 2-2 with the setback.

Mike Giambanco (Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals for the Camels, while senior Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) distributed a game-high six assists for the Camels.

Junior midfielder Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 12-of-14 face-offs for the winning side to go with a game-high nine ground balls.

Junior net-minder John Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the winning side.

Tyler Thomas (Mt. Pleasant, N.Y.) scored a goal and assisted on two others for the visiting Nor'Easters. Luke DiFiore (Gloucester, Mass.) and Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) chipped in with scores for UNE.

Junior Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) made 12 stops in the setback for the visitors.

Eicher set the tone for the Camels, burying a runner just 59 seconds into the contest. With 13:26 remaining, John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) scored for the third time in the past two days to make it a 2-0 game. Later on with 3:20 to go, Lyons connected with Eicher for another goal and Connecticut College enjoyed a 3-0 lead after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter, Hayes was the facilitator on the offensive side of the ball. With 14:06 remaining in the half, Hayes connected with PJ Mara (Princeton, N.J.) for a goal with a nifty feed from behind the cage. Later on in the quarter, Eicher scored his third goal of the half with 7:29 remaining to make it a 5-0 game.

Giambanco closed out the first half scoring when he took a pass from Hayes and buried a shot from the right side with 1:58 remaining and the Camels enjoyed a sizable 6-0 advantage at the intermission. However, the Nor'Easters showed some resilience in the third quarter. The visitors scored twice in the opening 2:33 to pull to within 6-2. UNE was then able to kill off a one-minute slashing penalty midway through the quarter to stick around.

But Eicher made it a 7-2 game with a critical goal at the 5:05 mark that shifted the momentum back to the home side. Giambanco tacked on another Camel score 30 seconds later and the Camels carried an 8-2 lead into the fourth quarter.

Connecticut College kept the pressure on with two-quick scoring strikes coming off the sticks of Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) and Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) coming 1:16 apart from each other and continued to pull away from the Nor'Easters en route to the 12-3 victory.

The Camels out-shot UNE 43-to-30 in the contest and held a 40-to-24 advantage in the ground ball war.

Both teams will return to action this coming Wednesday. The Camels will host Clarkson University in a noon-time match up while the Nor'Easters will visit Richard Stockton College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Women's Sailing

The eighth ranked Connecticut College women's sailing team opened its spring season with the Navy Spring Intersectional this weekend.

The Camels rallied on the second day of the regatta to climb all the way up from 12th place to finish sixth in the 18 team field with a score of 295 points.

The Boston College Eagles scored 157 points to win the intersectional. Brown University placed second with 209 points and Yale was third with 227 points.

In the A division, senior skipper Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.), Steph Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) and Elizabeth Wilsterman (Winchester, Mass.) teamed up to score 165 points for the Camels.

In the B division, sophomore skipper Atlantic Brugman (Barcelona, Spain), Lucy Wallace (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y) and Wilsterman scored 130 points for Connecticut College.

The Connecticut College coed sailing team competed in the John Jackson Regatta at Georgetown University.

Senior captain Mike Marshall (Jamestown, R.I.) and first year skipper Kevin Martland (Newport, R.I.) helped lead the Camels to a third place finish in the eight team field.
