Bears Best Mitchell in a Hometown Showdown

Bears keep knocking out victories

New London's hometown teams met on the diamond--but only one could be the winner. The following sports updates were provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Athletics Department.

Baseball: Bears Beat Mitchell

Sophomore Mike Massaro and junior Eddie Kalankiewicz each were 4 for 5 with five RBI’s as host Coast Guard scored 15 unanswered runs to beat Mitchell 17-4 in a non-conference game between the two New London schools.

Massaro had three doubles, a triple and three runs scored while Kalankiewicz had a double and three stolen bases as Coast Guard improved to 9-5 on the season by scoring a season-high 17 runs on a season-high 17 hits.

Mitchell (6-3) led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the top of the first with sophomore Osmer Collado having the big hit, a two-run single.

The Mariners led 4-2 before the Bears took the lead for good with The Mariners led 4-2 before the Bears took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Massaro tied the game with an RBI double before Kalankiewicz’s two-run double gave Coast Guard the lead for good at 6-4.

The Bears put the game away with eight runs in the sixth sending 14 batters to the plate. Massaro had a leadoff double a three-run triple in the inning while Kalankiewicz had a pair of RBI singles. Sophomore Tyler Babkiewich had a two-run single while classmate Joe Petry added an RBI single in the eight run outburst for a 15-4 lead.

Babkiewich had an RBI triple in the seventh while junior Mike Salerno had an RBI single to score Babkiewich and close the scoring.

Babkiewich had two hits and four RBI’s, while senior Graham Sherman and Petry each had two hits and an RBI in the win for Coast Guard.

Junior John Jackson, on exchange from Navy, had the first hit of his career in just his second career at bat for the Bears.

Collado had three hits and two RBI’s while junior Felix Colarte had three hits and a an RBI for Mitchell. Freshman Anthony Santiago and senior Carlos Hughes each added two hits for the Mariners who finished with 12 hits.

Sophomore Nate Toll improved to 3-1 on the season as he pitched the first five innings and scattered nine hits while allowing four earns, all earned. He walked three and struck out two. Junior Nick Peters, making his first appearance of the season, pitched the final four innings and allowed just three hits and struck out three to pickup the first save of his career.

Sophomore Kevin Carbon (0-1) took the loss for Mitchell. Carbon started and went 3 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and six earned runs.

Softball: Bears Remain Unbeaten

Senior Amanda Frederick had five hits including a homer and five RBI's while sophomore Megan Cook was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBI's and junior Hayley Feindel allowed just two hits and struck out 24 in 12 innings work as Coast Guard, ranked 12th nationally, remained unbeaten running its win streak to 16 straight with a doubleheader sweep of Roger Williams by scores of 5-0 and 8-0 in six innings.

Feindel fired a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts in the opener and pitched the first five innings of game two again allowing just one hit while fanning ten. Freshman Alex Rennie pitched the final inning of game two and allowed one hit while striking out one before the game was stopped because of the eight-run rule.

Feindel is now 16-0 on the season with 14 complete games, 12 shutouts and she has allowed just one earned run in 104 innings. The junior All-American has a current streak of 32 consecutive scoreless innings after starting the season with 55 straight scoreless innings.

In the opener, freshman Kaitlin Ward led off the second inning with a single, scoring three batters later on an RBI hit by sophomore Jamie Kim. Sophomore Megan Cook also scored in the inning on a wild pitch to put the Bears up 2-0.

Coast Guard would put three more runs on the board in the fifth inning, two of which came on a two-RBI double by Frederick.

Frederick finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI while Cook was 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Jaclyn Doolin took the loss for the Hawks, giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits in the complete game. Rachel Ehrlich had the sole hit for the Hawks in the game, a single through the left side in the third.

In the nightcap, freshman Devin Fellman began the game with a walk and would eventually come around to score on an RBI double by Frederick. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Frederick scored in the next at-bat on Holli Bastinck’s groundout to second.

Holding a 2-0 lead, Coast Guard added one more in the second, with sophomore Stacia Sarwinski coming in from third on a double steal attempt that was nullified by Lauren Tierney throwing out Cook at second.

The Bears tacked on two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an eight-run lead. They would hold RWU scoreless in the bottom half to win the shortened game.

Frederick was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Cook added two hits and two RBI.

Kelly Marcin suffered the loss, tagged for five runs (four earned) in five innings. Tierney and Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Conn.) each singled in the game for the Hawks.

Women's Swimming: Kim Shadwick Earns All-America Honors

Senior Kim Shadwick earned All-America honors with a sixth place finish in the 500 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Tennessee.

Shadwick posted a blistering time of 4:52.43 to shatter her own school record of 4:58.50 in the preliminaries which was fifth to earn her a spot in the championship heat and achieve All-America status for the first time in her remarkable career. She placed sixth in the championship final with a time of 4:53.59, the second fastest time of her career.

The three-time defending New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion in the 500 freestyle placed 24th in event at the NCAA Championships last season. The closest she had come to earning All-America honors was a 10th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:09.23 last year.

Shadwick will also race in the 200 and 1,650 freestyle later this week.

She becomes the first Coast Guard female swimmer to earn All-America honors since Darby Schlaht, a six-time All-American, earned All-America honors in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 2003.
